THE PROBLEM

Statistics show that 30% of South African schoolgirls (that’s one in every 10 girls), miss school during their menstruation time because they don’t have access to sanitary pads. As a result, they may resort to using less hygienic alternatives, like tissues or cloths. Following an outcry from communities and presenters on radio stations, our foundation (like many other South African organisations) is determined to make a meaningful difference to break the cycle.

OUR APPROACH

Girl learners receive Always sanitary pads from P&G, along with a puberty-education session that is facilitated by a trained nurse or nursing student. The learners also receive puberty-education booklets and bags. The puberty-education sessions address information and education about menstruation by teaching them about the female reproductive system and helping to normalise the event and it impacts their everyday lives. The facilitator also demonstrates how to use a sanitary pad, the disposal thereof, and keeping hygienic. Other fun elements are included, like ice breakers and songs and where time permits, career guidance also forms a part of the sessions.

HOW WE WORK

We do activations by which we visit each beneficiary school. This involves a lot of planning, plenty of supplies, many helping hands, many kilometers covered and challenges along the way. Even though we have to say goodbye to many smiling faces on our journey, we leave behind the know-how to lasts the girls a lifetime.

Schools are chosen

We focus on Q1-Q3 schools. Lists of beneficiary schools are provided by the Department of Basic Education, the Department for Social Development and the Department for Youth and Persons with Disabilities.

Beneficiaries are put forward

The beneficiary schools have a list of orphaned and vulnerable children. The ‘overseed’ is chosen first. 80-90% of girls get pads depending on our budget and the donations we receive.
