THE PROBLEM

For the average girl or boy child living in South Africa, or elsewhere on the continent, the future might not look so bright as most of the youth struggle to rise above the challenges of their circumstances. They might also not have a suitable role model or someone successful they can relate to.

THE IDEA OF A JOURNAL

The project was started in 2017 and since then, we’ve released a journal in 2017 and 2019.  The journal is a compilation of letters written by different women.
The letters are playful and fun and can appeal to girls of different age groups. Many of the women come from similar backgrounds to the girls and their stories are relatable and
motivational. We close the loop by offering a mentorship program so that beneficiaries can role play their lives around the stories profiled, and keep in contact with the writers.

HOW WE MAKE IT HAPPEN

We reach out to women who are role models in the country and accept applications from any other women who want to share their stories with girls to inspire and motivate them. In the future, we’d like to create mentor/mentee relationships where we match girls with woman whom they shadow as part of a ‘Take a girl to work day’. We’ll also be setting up career speed dating events where girls can interact with women from lesser-known careers to help them get inspired.

We call on women from different industries to write a 2 page letter to a girl.

The writers are selected and write and send their letters for editing.

The journal is compiled and designed into a booklet.

Our launch event is a fundraising dinner with the authors.
