THE PROBLEM

It takes more than an education to help a child – be it a boy or girl – to excel in life. It also only takes the basics for a child to help focus on their education. At times, young children from no-fee paying schools go through their school careers without soap for basic hygiene, school shoes for protection, and a school uniform for a sense of belonging and discipline. So, what does this loss of dignity mean? It might mean that the lack of basic essentials creates inequalities and could therefore, adversely impact on a child’s confidence and motivation.

WHY DIGNITY PACKS?

As part of our work for Always Keeping Girls in School, we realised that it took more than just sanitary pads to keep girls in school, and that boys also had unmet needs in order to excel. It was clear that there were many more problems; the lack of basic hygiene, many bare feet, and kids left out of school photos because they weren’t wearing the right uniform.

So we started sending out funding requests and even got a skort designed so that girls could feel comfortable and play. We wanted boys to be included too. We’re even partnering up with House of Moths to create our own Footprints range of products so that we can meet these needs faster.

HOW WE WORK

Our partnership with the Obama Foundation helps us drive this and other programs through their extensive network. Let us help you drive your CSI projects and we’ll coordinate everything, from getting discounts on the packs to organising them for delivery.

Send out requests

We select the region and
schools and then ask for sponsorships and donations.

Packing of packs

We source products from black female-owned businesses and get volunteers to help us pack.

Activation

We visit the schools, invite sponsors and make a day of it including a puberty education session.

Let us be part of your next CSI

From sponsorships to volunteering, there are many ways to help support our causes. Let’s start the conversation today.

WHAT WE’VE ACHIEVED

TEBA

In the North West Province we got involved with the TEBA Empowerment Program in Taung to assist girls, women and boys. We had beneficiaries across 10 schools.

AKGIS girls raising pads

Awareness March

We raised awareness by doing an awareness march and handing over a memorandum – based on the issues that surfaced – to the mayor.

GemBem Club

We also launched GemBem Club, which is a nationwide, peer educator based program where learners elect a small structured committee and create a vision and mission with a calendar of events.
