THE PROBLEM

Many schools teach about the history of South Africa and Africa, but the material is written from a Western perspective. Africans from opposite ends of the continent know very little about the history of their brothers and sisters up north or down south. This lack of genuine understanding of one another might be the reason for violence and dissimilarity amongst Africans.Social cohesion is needed, but as the youth make up 60% of the African population, it is challenging when they know nothing about their heritage or that of their peers.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Taking an interest in our history and the history of the rest of our continent, as told by Africans, helps to achieve social cohesion and celebrate Africanism – what it means to be African. It’s important for the promotion of values and to spread ideas – like how to solve problems in an African way where resources are usually scarce. This is a great way to teach each other about African innovations and showcase what African’s have created and given to the world. This will make up the content for the competition.

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

We’re employing researchers to collect stories from across the African continent and collate it to create the competition material. So all students from various schools in the North and South of Africa can participate and even visit the host country for the competition if they’re selected. Here’s how it works:

A host country is selected

Students from schools are notified about the host country and can learn more about it.

Participants from across Africa enter the competition

We call on participants from all schools in Africa to enter the competition.

The participants are selected and onboarded.

Everything leads up to the day of competition and celebrating the winner.

The competition is hosted and a winner is chosen

Everything leads up to the actual competition and celebrating the winner.

Participants return with skills and knowledge

Participants pledge to spread the knowledge in their own community.

Want to contribute your knowledge of your country and Africa?

Become one of our researchers and help us rewrite our stories in our own voices as Africans and become the authors of our futures by imparting your knowledge on our youth.
